Library Curse

Librarians get disagreeable when you don't return library books. If you "steal" our books, there's big trouble ahead, bucko.

“For him that stealeth a Book from this Library, let it change into a serpent in his hand and rend him. Let him be struck with Palsy, and all his Members blasted. Let him languish in Pain crying aloud for Mercy and let there be no sur-cease to his Agony till he sink in Dissolution. Let Bookworms gnaw his Entrails in token of the Worm that dieth not, and when at last he goeth to his final Punishment, let the flames of Hell consume him for ever and aye."

I'm a little slow on the news, but earlier this week Don LaFontaine passed away. This video shares a little about his work.

Dewey the Cat Has A New Book Out

Cuteness Overload.

It's going to be difficult for many of the librarians I know to pass this book up. I'll probably have to break down and check it out, myself.  I believe I reported earlier in my journal about Dewey's demise, so you know this is going to be a 5 tissue read toward the end. No matter, that mug shot is impossible to ignore!

Scott Brick's A Vampire!

An interesting take on the vampire myth, this is the story of a hard luck, street-wise vampire who refuses to  join  any of the  vampire clans stalking Manhattan.  It's tough being a rogue vampire and Joe Pitt seems to get beaten up a lot in his quasi-detective/tough guy assignments. The streets are rough and so is Joe.  The action and the language are hard and gritty.  Joe is no "pretty-boy" vampire,  but he does have a soft side when it comes to helping kids and the love of his life, a sensitive bar-girl who has no idea he's a vampire.

Huston provides an action-packed tale of vampires in the big city (no dark castles or crypts here) and throws in a few zombies at no extra charge. And Brick's interpretation of the vampire is engaging and, well, exactly right for this character. No matter that Joe really should work on his bad attitude and happens to drink  people's blood, you can't help but like the guy. Maybe it's the fact that he uses all the equipment you've ever seen at your local Red Cross to "politely" extract only a pint or so of his victim's blood, or maybe it's his humanity trying to overcome the craving of the "virus" that has infected his body. Whatever it is, Brick brings the dead to life in this audio production. If you like vampires (and maybe even if you don't) you'll want to hear Joe's story - reading it simply won't do it justice.

July Science Fiction & Fantasy Audiobooks!

It's time for the July wrap-up of Science Fiction and Fantasy audiobooks. If this had been around when I was a kid, instead of keeping my head stuck in a book, I would have had it stuck between a set of headphones!

You've gotta admit, this is one glum group! Good for them for trying to have fun with the announcement (or at least I HOPE they're having fun - it's kind of hard to tell). Thanks to GalleyCat for originally posting this info.
